| Established in August 2000, WIN is a non-profit organization, of which objective is to set up the academic structure and business of a new information network. In order to achieve the purpose, WIN promotes and tries to spread researches on the present and future situation of social factors such as product, business, marketing, and technologies of wearable information network.
One of our attempts is the develoment of service of "Wearable Information Networks" to wirelessly monitor plants, animals, humans and artifacts on which the miniaturized terminals are attached. Through the fusion between micromachine, microsensor, and network technologies, we aim to positively contribute to the development of human health and wealth, as well as the reservation of the natural environment.
If a watch-like small sensor is worn by a person, positional and vital information can be sent/monitored and used for accident prevention and checking individual physical conditions. Also by linking various things and places such as aimals, plants, transport syustems, manufacturing sites, hospitals, humans and artifacts, a system to utilize information would be established. For instance, remote monitoring of a dam would enable us to manage necessary information for disaster prevention. We intend to spread such "Wearable" IT systems into the societyFigure１..
■ The Mission of NPO WIN
As shown in Figure 2, NPO WIN also wishes to return the knowledge of academia to the society. Conventionally, the only link between univeristy and and societywas found in the academic fields. [Academia-Academia Collaboration] In recent, the collabotation with industry has been active through organiations such as Technology Licensing Organization(TLO). In contrast, WIN proposes the idea of "Society-Academia Collaboration," to diffuse a system in which university and society can collaborate based on the activities of non-profit organization.
As its name suggests, NPO is the organization that does not pursue making a profit. But it is permitted for NPO to have profitable activities to gain necessary capitals for achieving the public business. In 2003 May, NPO law was reviewed in Japan, allowing non-profit organizations for research and development like WIN to become legal entities. With specifit missions shared between the members, we aim to grow into a R&D NPO, which has over 100 researchers and funds of 10 billion yen, and provides no-profitable co-operation between university and various enterprises in the future.
The original body of NPO WIN started in 1989 as a study group of professor Kiyoshi Itao and some enterprises. I order to creare wearable information networks in practice, researchers working for company and those in university co-operated and advanced a study on new social systems such as miniaturized optical memory with high-capacity and the development of miniaturized device and data communication technologies between different networks. In 2000 May,the group exhibited a display of the core technology in the "Tokyo Business Show" held in Tokyo Big Site.
NPO WIN was later established in 2000 August, with researchers in 14 universities including the University of Tokyo and 28 organizations such as companies specializing in the fields of electronics and information.
In 2000 January, the magazine "Natureinterface"was first published, promoting the idea of society-academia collaboration. The initial purpose of this bimonthly magazine was to introduce the "Nature interfacer - The future of IT" in detail that WIN pursues.
In 2002 November, Environmental Planning Society was set up as a part of WIN's organizations. Its establishment was largely influenced by the rising consciousness for reservation of the earth environment. The organization aims to ensure the study field of environmental planning in Japan and to bring human capitals with special knowledge in environmental planning to the society, through continuous training.
